What are the safety tips for using wire strippers?

To strip a cable, whether electrical or telecommunications (fiber optic or coaxial), it is recommended to use the appropriate tool, a wire stripper or cable stripper. In this entry, we will give you some tips for using these tools in the best way.

When using this type of tool, we must be careful with the blade, pinches caused by the pliers or systems of each tool, as well as the risk of electrocution.

To avoid accidents that can be caused by the sharp edge of our wire stripper blade, avoid working in dark places, as well as working when tired (and in any other situation, for safety), and avoid distractions. The best thing is to use gloves.

Likewise, to avoid problems with pinching, it is ideal that our tool is clean; sometimes we handle other substances and these can remain on our tool, and when operating it, our hand can slip, and we could have an accident. Again, the best thing is to use gloves, as well as to keep our hands clean.

Learn here about the different types of gloves and discover the ideal one for your job.

Finally, always make sure that the cable you will be working on is de-energized and that there are no risks of false contact with other energized cables within the circuit. We should never work on energized cables unless the tool has a certificate that guarantees protection.

The appropriate way to use our wire stripper or cable stripper is to hold it by the handle, with your fingers away from the cutting area and in a fist. If we are holding the cable with the other hand, we must also make sure it is away from the edge of the tool.
