Test and measurement equipment for fiber optic links

Optical networks and their components must be checked before, during, and after an installation.

The equipment's tasks are to:

-Validate transmissions between the transmission center and the customer's terminal to expected characteristics.

-Identify network problems, damage, or degradation.

-Perform physical tests and check for attenuation in installed components such as splices, connectors, breaks, bends, signal loss, among others.

Some of the tests performed on a network.

Optical power measurement: measurement is taken at the measurement point. For single-mode networks at 1310, 1490, 1550, and 1625 nm, and for multimode networks at 850 and 1300 nm.

Bidirectional optical loss measurement: measurement of optical loss in both directions of the network. This becomes a necessary test as line performance differs depending on the transmission direction.

Optical loss measurement: determined from the relationship between received power minus emitted power.

Link characterization: detection of events such as installed network elements or anomalies, and estimation of the total network length.

Losses, splices, splitters: measurement of losses for detected events in the network.

Traffic detection: detection of signal presence and direction in the fiber without disconnecting the line.

Fault localization: visual identification and localization of fiber bends or imperfections, as well as detection of deficiencies in connectors, especially those made in the field.

Video inspection: visual inspection of the physical condition and cleanliness of connectors.
