Blowing or jetting installs fiber optic cable by combining mechanical pushing and high-speed airflow. Unlike traditional pulling, it does not require a pull cord to pre-run the entire conduit.
Air helps support and transport the cable within the duct, while the blowing unit controls its feed. This method is particularly useful for long routes or those with multiple bends, provided the duct system is properly prepared.
However, air alone does not eliminate friction between the cable and the inner wall.
What is the function of lubricant?
Blowing lubricant forms a thin film inside the duct. Its function is to reduce the resistance the cable encounters as it advances.

For conventional fiber optic ducts and cables, Polywater Prelube 2000 is designed as a pre-lubricant to reduce friction during blowing. According to its technical information, it can be used with different cable jackets and ducts, including polyethylene and HDPE systems.
In installations with microcable and microduct, an even thinner film is needed. Polywater Prelube 5000 was specifically formulated to reduce the friction of small diameter microcables within microducts and to be distributed with low coating levels.
Does more lubricant mean greater distance?
Not necessarily.
Excessive application can waste product and complicate the operation. The quantity should be calculated taking into account:
- Duct inner diameter
- Installation length
- Duct material
- Cable type and diameter
- Route conditions
- Manufacturer's recommendations
It is also important to use the correct product for blowing. A lubricant that is too thick may not distribute correctly within a microduct.
