What is the Internet of Things?

Example: We have an alarm clock set for 6 am, but during the night, events occur that would delay our morning commute, so the alarm clock advances the alarm by 20 minutes to overcome this setback. At the same time, the coffee maker knows we're going to wake up earlier than usual, so it automatically programs itself to brew coffee.

Another example is in agriculture, thanks to the Internet of Things, we can automate irrigation in corn, wheat, and other crops. With the help of sensors that indicate the moisture level in the soil and the acquisition of this information, we have better control over the irrigation system.

What kinds of objects make up the Internet of Things?

Basically, any object or, from now on, "Smart Device" can be connected to the internet, such as coffee makers, cars, refrigerators, among others.

Smart devices or objects have a great peculiarity that distinguishes them from common objects: they have sensors, integrated circuits, and connectivity that allows them to collect and exchange data among themselves or with the internet.

The Internet of Things is composed of two fundamental elements:

• Hardware

• Software

The function of hardware within IoT is to make objects smart devices based on integrated circuits and sensors, which collect information from the environment and can send that information to the internet or among themselves.

On the other hand, software fulfills the function of visualizing device information and making decisions with that information.
