What are OTL and ONT/ONU?

Within passive optical fiber networks (PON), there are active elements that help transmit and receive information to the end user.

These elements are called OLT (Optical Line Terminal) and ONU (Optical Network Unit).

What is an OLT?

An OLT (Optical Line Terminal) is the starting point of a passive optical network (PON). The main function of the OLT is to convert, frame, and transmit signals through the PON network and coordinate the multiplexing of the optical network terminal (ONT).

OLTs are mainly found in the offices of telephone and internet service providers.

What is an ONU/ONT?

An ONU (Optical Network Unit) is the endpoint of a passive optical network. Its role is to convert optical signals transmitted through the optical fiber into electrical signals, which are then sent to devices connected to the ONU.

The ONU can send, aggregate, and manage different types of data from connected devices and send them upstream to the OLT.

ONT is the same as ONU: ONT is an ITU-T term, while ONU is an IEEE term.

ONTs are located at the end-user's premises.
