What are patch cords?

Patch cords, also known as patch cables or connection cables, are the cables used to connect network equipment. UTP cables are commonly referred to as such, but sometimes the term can also refer to fiber optic cables.

We can find them in different colors and dimensions, depending on what our project requires. In the case of UTP cable patch cords, the color only serves for identification, and if we want to know the category of a cable, it will be necessary to check the cable's engraving, as shown in the following image.

On the other hand, in fiber optic patch cords (or jumpers as they are commonly known), the color does determine the type of fiber optic.

Something important to mention is that for UTP cable patch cords, the longer they are required to be, the larger the cable gauge will be, as they normally have additional protection and shielding to prevent signal loss. And in addition to those available on the market, already manufactured, we can also make our own cables using the tool kit shown in Image 3. This ensures the connection is correct with a cable tester and certifies our network to ensure everything is functioning properly.
