Measuring equipment

Fiber optic measurement equipment is essential to ensure the proper functioning and performance of fiber optic networks. Some of the most common equipment includes:

  • Visual Fault Locator (VFL): This device uses a laser diode that emits a visible 650 nm light, which travels along the optical fiber to check if the light is able to travel the link from beginning to end. If the laser does not reach the end of the link, it means there is a break or bend in the optical fiber.

  • Power Meter + Light Source: This equipment allows measuring the loss in the optical fiber, as well as the absolute power of a link. There are devices that include both modules, light source and power meter, in a single device.

  • Fiber Optic Explorer: This equipment not only measures the distance of a link but is also capable of detecting up to 8 events in it, incorporating a Visual Fault Locator (VFL). However, it does not have internal memory to store measurement data.

  • Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR): This is the most complete measurement equipment on the market, as it allows determining the return loss, reflectance, attenuation, and distance of the link, in addition to detecting events that occur along the optical fiber. In a single device, it includes all the necessary functions to perform a comprehensive analysis.

  • Power Meter: This equipment is one of the most valued for its quality and price on the market. Its compact design and high functionality make it indispensable for a complete fiber optic tool kit. It can perform linear and non-linear measurements, as well as absolute and relative optical power measurements, at different wavelengths.
