A wireless access point (WAP) is a network device that allows devices to connect wirelessly to a local area network (LAN). Wireless access points also have the ability to extend the range and strength of an existing wireless network, thus providing greater wireless coverage, increasing the number of users who can connect to it, and eliminating "dead spots," especially in spaces such as offices or large buildings. In addition, WAPs allow the creation of wireless local area networks (WLANs) within a LAN, in order to provide better organization and security for wireless devices. Using a WAP allows different devices to connect wirelessly to a LAN simply and at a lower cost compared to a wired solution.
Wireless access points are generally connected to a router or switch via UTP cable and project a WiFi signal to a designated area, as shown in the following image.

Access points support different IEEE standards. The standards operate at different frequencies (commonly 2.4 GHz and/or 5 GHz), provide different bandwidths (currently up to 1000 Mbps), and support different numbers of channels.
Wireless access points are highly relevant devices for IoT and IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) solutions.
