The Level: what is it and how many are there?

A level is a measuring instrument that is present in everyday life, whether physical or intangible, but do you know what a level is and what its uses are?

Daily, our eyes perceive thousands of objects; perspective allows us to intuit their three-dimensional configuration and thus our brain can process them correctly. Sometimes, if we see a crooked frame or piece of furniture, our perspective changes completely, giving us the sensation of inclination.

To solve this problem, there is a measuring instrument that allows us to determine the verticality or horizontality of an object; this way we can correct inclinations. This instrument is the level.

What is a level?

A level is a measuring tool used to determine the horizontal (level) and vertical (plumb) orientation of an object or surface. Commonly used in the construction sector, civil engineering, metalworking, carpentry, and even present in photography.

In the fields of civil engineering and construction, the level is a crucial tool; thanks to it, the precision and safety of structures can be verified, thus avoiding future problems.

The level is so useful that it can currently be found as a smartphone app, useful for household chores; from something as simple as hanging pictures or installing shelves, to installing washing machines and refrigerators, thus avoiding affecting their operation.

Types of levels

For each professional field there are different levels, here they are:

Bubble level

One type of level is the bubble level, which is based on a transparent tube divided into three equal parts, filled with a liquid and an air bubble inside.

Figure 1. Bubble level.

The level (Figure 1) has 3 levels and they are for measuring verticality, horizontality, and inclination. If the bubble is in the middle and within the marked lines, then we say it is leveled; either at 90°, 180° or 45° (as exemplified in figure 2) according to our measurement.

Laser level.

The level has adapted to consumer needs, and laser levels are more comfortable and easier to use; they are usually mounted on a tripod (which has a bubble level) and some self-level with very little error.

There are two types: line and dot. Line laser levels project laser light lines that serve as a guide so that we can make installations more easily (Figure 3).

On the other hand, dot levels project laser light dots that can also serve as a guide if we need to place specific points on a wall or ceiling if we need to install support systems or a lamp. (Figure 4)

How to select the right level?

To select the right level always consider the following:

  • The location and lighting
  • The position of the measurements
  • The size of the spaces you usually work with

We hope that your doubts have been resolved and that you now know what a level is, the types that exist, and the fields where they are used.
