What is tool corrosion?

Corrosion is a chemical reaction that represents the deterioration of a material; it involves 3 things: the material, the environment, and water. This phenomenon is very common in our work tools and occurs when they are made of ferrous materials such as carbon steel and come into contact with corrosive agents such as salt water, environmental humidity, acids, or oxidizing chemical products.

Some ferrous materials contain alloys that protect tools from corrosion, such as stainless steels or noble metals like aluminum, bronze, copper, titanium, or tungsten.

All tools are prone to corrosion; for example, chisels, cold chisels, hammers, and axes are constantly exposed to impact and friction, so the surface is always exposed to air and humidity. Pliers often suffer from corrosion mainly in their cutting area, and if we use pliers to cut tension cables, for example, an electric arc can be generated, causing rapid corrosion.

To prevent corrosion in our tools, it is important to take care of them: store them in an appropriate box or case, avoid humidity, and clean them regularly.
