A metropolitan area network (MAN) is a network that interconnects users with computer resources in a geographical region the size of a metropolitan area.
MANs do not have to be in urban areas; the term "metropolitan" implies the size of the network, not the demographics of the area it serves. These are typically used in cities and other locations with a coverage range of 50 to 60 km.
Metropolitan area networks are larger than a local area network (LAN) , but located in a single geographic area that is smaller than a wide area network (WAN) . Generally, MANs consist of several interconnected LANs through a dedicated backbone connection. Metropolitan area networks are high-speed networks that provide a large information transfer capacity, and due to the long distances, fiber optics is an efficient transmission medium for connecting this type of network. In short, a metropolitan area network (MAN) can be considered as a group of one or more LANs connected to each other.
