Before, during, and after the installation of a fiber optic cable, it is recommended to perform the following tests to detect any network failures early. Basically, there are 4 phases:
1. Visual Inspection
The visual inspection test consists of checking the reels once they are in our hands. The reels must be placed on their rolling sides and not stacked on their bases. If any physical damage is observed, it is recommended to set those reels aside for a more detailed review.
2. Pre-installation Test
The pre-installation test consists of reviewing the spools with an OTDR. This test allows us to check for possible damage or breaks caused during shipping or handling of the material.
3. Installation Test
Subsequently, during the installation test, which is recommended to be done in two parts using our OTDR: before making fiber fusions or splices, as this way it can be verified that there is no damage during installation (whether due to tension, pulling, or blowing the fiber), and after the fusions have been made.
4. Final Acceptance Test
Finally, for the last acceptance test, a point-to-point review is performed again with the OTDR, and these results are compared with the pre-installation test. This will allow us to know the network details and total losses, as well as establish a continuous testing program.
