Guide to the trencher: types and applications in underground installations.

The trencher is an essential tool for excavating trenches for installing cables, pipes, and drainage systems. Its use optimizes work in difficult terrain, reducing costs and execution times.

What is a trencher and what are its main parts?

A trencher is a machine used to perform excavations in the ground efficiently and precisely. It is commonly used in underground installation projects for fiber optics, electrical wiring, and hydraulic systems.

Main parts of a trencher.

  • Cutting unit: can be a chain, wheel, or disc that cuts the ground to form the trench.
  • Engine: responsible for providing the necessary power for excavation. It can be internal combustion or electric.
  • Chassis: structure that supports the components and ensures the machine's stability.
  • Transmission system: set of gears and mechanisms that regulate the speed and force of excavation.
  • Bearings and wheels: allow the machine to move over different types of terrain.
  • Control system: panel or controls that allow adjusting the speed, depth, and cutting power.
  • Hopper or expulsion duct: where excavated material is accumulated or expelled.

Types of trenchers.

Wheel trencher.

The wheel trencher uses a disc with cutting teeth to quickly open trenches in soft or moderately compact soils. Its main advantage is its operating speed, which makes it ideal for medium-sized projects with rapid excavation needs.

It consists of a wheel that rotates in the direction of travel, which has teeth on its edge known as segments; these segments are what cut the earth.

Chain trencher.

This type of trencher operates with an excavation chain similar to a chainsaw, allowing deep and precise cuts. It is ideal for hard terrains and deep excavations in fiber optic and large pipe projects.

Microtrencher

Designed for narrow and deep cuts, the microtrencher is perfect for fiber optic installation with minimal environmental impact. Its compact size and quiet operation make it an efficient option for urban areas with construction restrictions.

It is compact, remotely operated, generates little noise and dust; its use is ideal for cities as it does not obstruct traffic.
