Cat 5e

Category 5e UTP cable is a type of twisted pair cable used in structured cabling to transmit data at speeds up to 100 Mbps at frequencies up to 100 MHz. It is an improved version of category 5 cable, created to support Gigabit Ethernet and offer a bandwidth of 100 MHz. Although still common in some applications, it has been considered technologically obsolete since 2016, and it is recommended to use newer categories such as category 6A or 7A for applications requiring higher speed and bandwidth.

  • Features of Category 5e UTP cable: Category 5e UTP cable is used for both indoor and outdoor applications, although the jacket of the outdoor cable is designed to withstand harsh weather conditions.

  • Applications of Category 5e UTP cable: It is common in home and commercial networks, as well as in security and CCTV systems. However, its use in applications requiring higher speeds, such as ERP, SAP, or CRM systems, is not optimal.

  • Lifespan of Category 5e UTP cable: According to the EIA/TIA 568B structured cabling standard, the technological lifespan of cabling is 12 years, which means category 5e has been considered obsolete since 2016.

  • Recommendations: It is recommended to use newer categories such as category 6A or 7A to ensure higher speed and bandwidth, as category 5e UTP cable only supports 100 Mbps.
